Learn
At Brilliantly Neurodiverse we understand that neurodiverse individuals are not lacking intelligence; rather, the world is simply not designed for the way we process information. This often leads to miscommunication, particularly when our differences aren’t considered or when neurodivergent women remain undiagnosed, even to themselves.
Unique Challenges
Neurodivergent women face dual hurdles in the workplace – first as women, and second as individuals with neurological differences. Statistics show that women generally have a harder time being promoted or receiving equal pay compared to men – a gap of 9.4% (CIPD, 2023), however when you add in a disability this further increases the gap – to 30% for disabled women (Disability Rights, 2024). They also experience microaggressions more frequently, leading to higher levels of burnout according to McKinsey’s Women in the Workplace study (2023) 78% of women who face microaggressions will self-shield at work which makes them four times more likely almost always to be burned out.
Additionally, individuals with neurodiverse conditions such as ADHD, autism, OCD, Parkinson’s, TBI, and Tourette’s face significant employment challenges. In the UK only 22% of autistic adults are in any kind of employment, compared to 80% of non-disabled people (National Autistic Society, 2021) It’s not just getting a job that is difficult for the neurodiverse, it’s retaining it. A review by the Attention Deficit Disorder Association found that adults with ADHD are nearly 60% more likely to be fired, and three times more likely to leave a job on impulse (Augmentive, 2023).
